Where it's the most likely cause of death

What changes the odds

What you can do

  • Fit smoke alarms on every floor, and test them every month.
  • If you burn gas, coal or wood at home, fit a carbon monoxide alarm and have boilers, stoves and chimneys checked every year.
  • In freezing weather, make sure no one who has been drinking walks home or sleeps outside alone; in heatwaves, check on older relatives and neighbours.
  • At work, use the safety gear for heights, machinery and electricity — every time.

What the evidence says

  • In home fires, the death rate is about 2 times as high without a working smoke alarm. — NFPA, Smoke Alarms in U.S. Home Fires
